Super Eagles forward Victor Boniface has returned to Germany after medical checks raised concerns over his proposed transfer to AC Milan from Bayer Leverkusen.
The 24-year-old striker had travelled to Italy for a season-long loan move to the Rossoneri, but the deal has been placed on hold following extensive medical examinations. Boniface underwent tests at the La Madonnina clinic and Galeazzi Hospital in Milan over a 48-hour period, but was eventually sent back to Leverkusen for further evaluation.
Boniface has a history of fitness setbacks, including a right knee injury in 2019 and 2020, and muscle problems that sidelined him for part of last season. The medical results prompted Milan’s medical staff to exercise caution before finalizing the transfer.
A Milan official explained the situation:
“There were no extra medicines. We knew that he had problems in the past; we are evaluating everything as planned with regard to the health and fitness of the player. His qualities are undoubted. We are just trying to make the right decision for this situation.”
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano also confirmed on Sunday that Boniface had returned to Germany, adding that AC Milan are yet to give the green light. Writing on X, Romano said:
“After medical tests at AC Milan, Victor Boniface returns to Germany, as there’s still no green light to his move. After 48 hours in Milano, Boniface will be back in Leverkusen today, waiting for AC Milan’s imminent decision.”
According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Milan may now abandon the move altogether. The Italian club had earlier agreed a €5 million loan fee with a €24 million purchase option for the Super Eagles forward.
The Rossoneri are actively searching for a new striker after the departures of Alvaro Morata and Tammy Abraham this summer. Boniface had been identified as a prime target due to his form in Germany, where he played a crucial role in Bayer Leverkusen’s 2024 Bundesliga title-winning campaign.
Since joining Leverkusen from Belgian side Union Saint-Gilloise in August 2022, Boniface has scored 11 goals and provided two assists in 27 competitive appearances. His potential move to Italy now hangs in the balance, as both clubs await final medical clearance before making a decision.
