Early Life and Move to Italy

Amad Diallo was born in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, although in pursuit of better opportunities, Amad moved to Italy at a young age.

This transition marked the beginning of a significant chapter in his life, exposing him to new cultures and challenges. Settling in the Emilia-Romagna region, he adapted quickly, balancing his education with his burgeoning football aspirations.

In 2014, Amad joined the local amateur club Boca Barco, where his exceptional talent became evident.

His performances on the field were characterized by remarkable speed and agility, catching the attention of scouts from top-tier Italian clubs which was crucial in laying the foundation for his professional career.

Atalanta

Recognizing his potential, Atalanta’s youth academy recruited Amad in 2015. His integration into the academy was seamless, and he quickly became a standout player in the youth ranks. His contributions were instrumental in securing two Campionato Primavera 1 titles for the team, an outstanding achievement the youth level.

Amad’s consistent performances earned him a call-up to the senior team. On October 27, 2019, he made his Serie A debut against Udinese, marking the occasion with a goal. This achievement made him the first player born in 2002 to score in Italy’s top flight, offering a glimpse into his precocious talent and composure on the big stage that has stood till this day.

His time at Atalanta allowed him to develop skills across various attacking positions. This adaptability made him a valuable asset and attracted attention from clubs across Europe, setting the stage for the next phase of his career.

Manchester United, Rangers and Sunderland

In January 2021, Manchester United secured Amad’s transfer under Ole Gunnar Solksjaer, a move which basically showed how much Manchester United believed in his potential. The transfer, reportedly valued at €25 million plus add-ons, reflected the high expectations placed upon the young winger. United’s management viewed him as a long-term investment capable of bolstering their attacking options.

To facilitate his adaptation to English football, Amad was loaned to Rangers in Scotland in January 2022. During his stint, he made 10 appearances and netted three goals, gaining valuable first-team experience.

The following season, he joined Sunderland on loan, further honing his skills and demonstrating his resilience and determination to succeed at the highest levels of the sport.

Manchester United

Upon returning to Manchester United in December 2023, Amad Diallo found out that Erik Ten Hag was not willing to start him, preferring to start Antony. So he was limited to appearances from the Bench, Domestic Competitions and Preseason games.

However, under the guidance of new manager Ruben Amorim, he was deployed as a right wing-back, a tactical shift that leveraged his offensive prowess and defensive capabilities. This strategic move paid dividends, as he registered three assists in his first three matches, playing a vital role in the team’s resurgence.

His versatility allowed him to excel in various positions, including winger, midfielder, and wing-back. This adaptability not only made him an invaluable asset to the team but also showcased his tactical intelligence and willingness to embrace new roles for the benefit of the squad.

A standout moment in his United career came during a match against Southampton, where he delivered a stellar performance that was instrumental in securing a 3-0 victory. Such displays have endeared him to fans and solidified his status as one of the club’s rising stars.

International Career with Ivory Coast

Amad Diallo’s journey with the Ivory Coast national team began in March 2021, when he was called up for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers. His inclusion was a significant moment, as it demonstrated the high regard in which he was held by the national team selectors despite his young age.

Making his debut against Niger on March 26, 2021, he quickly showed flashes of his creativity and technical ability, raising hopes that he could be a future star for the Elephants. His call-up was part of a broader effort to integrate young and promising talents into the national team setup, ensuring a strong squad for future tournaments.

One of the defining moments of Amad’s early international career came in June 2021 during a friendly match against Burkina Faso. With the game tied in the dying moments, he stepped up to take a free kick just outside the penalty box. Showing remarkable composure for a player of his age, Amad curled the ball past the goalkeeper, securing a dramatic last-minute winner. The goal was widely celebrated and highlighted his potential to become a key figure for Ivory Coast.

Later that summer, he represented the country at the Tokyo Olympics, where he played alongside other promising young talents. His performances in Japan continued tales of his reputation as being one of the brightest prospects in Ivorian football.

Since then, Amad has remained a part of the national team setup, featuring in various international friendlies and qualifying matches. His pace, dribbling ability, and eye for goal have made him a valuable asset to the squad. While competition for places in the Ivorian attack is fierce, with experienced players like Wilfried Zaha and Nicolas Pépé also in the squad, Amad has continued to earn opportunities.

With the upcoming AFCON tournament on the horizon, fans and analysts are eager to see him fully recover from injury and play a key role in Ivory Coast’s campaign. His blend of youthful energy and technical brilliance could prove to be a decisive factor in the nation’s quest for continental glory.

Recent Injury and Impact on Manchester United

In early March 2025, during a Europa League match against PAOK, Amad Diallo delivered a stellar performance, scoring both goals in Manchester United’s 2-0 victory. However, he sustained an ankle injury late in the game, raising concerns among fans and the club’s medical staff.

Subsequent assessments revealed that the injury was more severe than initially anticipated. Diallo confirmed via social media that he would be sidelined for an extended period, expressing his disappointment at missing crucial fixtures.

His absence has been keenly felt, with Manchester United experiencing a dip in form, an obvious sign of his importance to the team as well as how much he is almost irreplaceable.

Recovery and Prospects for AFCON

Despite the setback, there is optimism surrounding Diallo’s recovery. The club’s medical team is working diligently to ensure he returns to full fitness before the end of the season, and hopefully that would make him ready ahead of the AFCON 2025.

Fans and analysts alike are hopeful that he will replicate his club form on the international stage, bolstering Ivory Coast’s prospects in the tournament.
