Early Life and Family
Martin Odegaard, the son of former footballer Hans Erik Odegaard, was born on December 17, 1998 in Drammen, Norway.
The younger Odegaard has always credited his father with instilling a good attitude toward the game in him as a young player; he reiterated this in an interview in 2014.
“Dad has never talked about winning, about being the best,” said Odegaard. “It has only been about development. About getting a little better all the time. It should be fun, stress-free, harmless.
“He always says that it is not dangerous to make mistakes. He wants me to make a mistake. And try again. He has always encouraged using the ball.” The midfielder said in an interview.
Career
After playing for local club Drammen Strong, where his father was a coach, and at Stromsgodset, a Norwegian club based in Gulskogen, Drammen, in 2009, Odegaard youth career was starting to take shape.
When he was 13, Odegaard began training with the first team of Stromsgodset. At 15 years and 118 days old, he became the youngest player to appear in a league match for the club.
He then signed his first professional contract with Stromsgodset On 5 May 2014. In December of the same year, he trained with Liverpool FC and Bayern Munich and made a visit to Arsenal. He then trained with Real Madrid in January 2015 and moved to the Spanish club.
Real Madrid
On 21 January 2015, Real Madrid announced the signing of 16-year-old Martin Odegaard from Stromsgodset in a deal worth up to €3 million.
At the age of sixteen, Odegaard trained with both the first team and reserve side. He played for the reserve side, who were coached by Zinedine Zidane at the time, it was a dream come true for the young Midfielder.
Speaking after joining the Spanish side He said: “It’s a dream come true,” . “It’s incredible. It’s an honour to join the best club in the world. I don’t feel the pressure but it’s different to play for Real Madrid than for Stromsgodset. I will try and enjoy this dream as much as possible.”
Odegaard made his first-team debut for Real Madrid on 23 May 2015. He was a substitute in a 7–3 home win over Getafe, becoming the youngest debutant in the history of the Spanish club at 16 years and 157 days old.
On 30 November 2016, he made his full debut for Real Madrid in the Copa Del Rey round of 32 against Cultural Leonesa. Odegaard was then loaned to Dutch clubs, SC Heerenveen and Vitesse in 2017 and 2018 respectively.
Odegaard was again loaned to Real Sociedad for another season In the summer of 2019. He spent the next two years playing regularly at the club and gained some valuable first-team experience. In January 2021, the Norwegian moved to the Premier League.
Arsenal
Premier League club, Arsenal signed Odegaard on loan from Real Madrid in January 2021. He made his debut in a 0–0 draw with Manchester United at the Emirates in the Premier League, coming on as a substitute in the second half.
On 11 March 2021, Odegaard scored his first goal for Arsenal in a 3–1 Europa League win over Olympiakos. The victory gave Arsenal an advantage going into the second leg of their round of 16 matchup.
He scored his first Premier League goal for Arsenal on 14 March 2021, scoring in a 2-1 north London derby win over Tottenham Hotspur at Home.
Odegaard made 14 appearances for Arsenal during his loan spell, scoring one goal and assisting on two others. In the summer of 2021, he returned to his Spanish club and initially joined the first team.
However, Odegaard did not stay long at Real Madrid, he rejoined Arsenal on 20 August 2021 on a permanent basis for a reported €35 million that could rise to €40 million. He was given the number eight shirt.
International Career
At age 15, Odegaard made his senior debut for Norway against the United Arab Emirates on 27 August 2014, becoming the youngest player ever to play for the team.
